Darren Joseph is a Coast Salish artist from the Squamish Nation. His ancestral name is Shmoqwilum which he received when he was 17 years old. Joseph began sketching and carving as a hobby at the young age of 9.
In 2002 Joseph began a full-time career in carving. He has worked under the guidance of such well known carvers as Ray Natrall, and Klathe Bhi. Joseph has primarily focused on masks, carving out of red and yellow cedar as well as alder. Additionally, he has carved a totem pole and contributed to the production of 5 ocean canoes. His careful attention to detail is demonstrated in each piece of his work. Joseph’s natural talent allows him to produce work well beyond his carving years. His technique is constantly evolving as he challenges himself to experiment with different methods, while maintaining a responsibility to the teachings of his ancestors. Joseph intends to keep Aboriginal culture alive through his artwork and to inspire future generations of artists.
