Born 1966, Skidegate, British Columbia
Desmond Bowker is a Haida artist of the Raven family, and was born in Skidegate, BC, in 1966. Bowker attended the University of Victoria, where he got his BA. He also has training in Handicapped Services from Camosun College, and now works in a specialized schooling program for autistic and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder affected children.
He has been fortunate enough to study under the expert guidance of renowned Tsimshian Artist, Dempsey Bob. Under Dempsey's tutelage, Bowker learned how to make tools for carving and painting, work with wood in carving, and the importance of form lines in completed works of art. Bowker began to study traditional Haida designs, a process which proved valuable when he later worked with the accomplished Haida artist Ron Wilson.
Bowker now creates Northwest Coast art working in various media forms: wood, silkscreen printing, argillite and fabric (Button Blankets). His work is represented in collections in Canada, the United States, and Germany.
