Born 1953, Alert Bay, British Columbia
Harold Alfred was born and raised in Alert Bay, BC, surrounded by Kwakwaka'wakw art and artists of the 'Namgis First Nation. Carving since the 1970s, Harold's artistic training includes jewelry design, carving and general fine arts at Malaspina College in Nanaimo BC. Here he studied under Peter McNair at the BC Provincial Museum. Harold has used his skill in the restoration of mortuary poles in Alert Bay, establishing himself as an adept wood carver.
Alfred's work in jewelry is well known, focusing on sterling silver bracelets and earrings, as well as pendants. Many of his pieces feature detailed cut-out designs of a modern style, reflecting the bridging of his education in the legends and traditions of Kwakwaka'wakw art and the contemporary influence provided by his extensive studies.
In addition to a deep appreciation for his cultural heritage, Harold Alfred credits many people for influencing his work: Willie Seaweed, Henry Speck Senior, Charlie James and Tony Hunt Senior. Harold's work is held in public and private collections around the world, and has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions, including "Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation" at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
