Born 1969, Queen Charlotte City, BC
James Sawyer apprenticed under Pat Wesley, and has continuously carved since 1996. His work is influenced by Haida Master Carver, Reg Davidson.
Sawyer works mainly in wood, carving paddles and bentwood boxes; he also produces drums, prints and blanket designs. More recently, he has branched out into engraving gold and silver. His innovative style combines traditional Northwest Coast designs with popular culture.
Living in Masset, BC James is now a mentor for young artists. He also works with the Haida Repatriation Committee to recover historic objects taken from traditional burial grounds.
