Born 1960, Sandspit, Haida Gwaii
Born on Haida Gwaii in 1960, Tim Boyko is a Haida artist and a member of the Raven Clan. His grandfather, Tim Pearson, was a respected Argillite Carver in his time. Boyko was born one year before his grandfather died, and was named in his honour.
Boyko began creating Northwest Coast Art when he was in his early teens. He carved at first in Argillite, a black stone found on Haida Gwaii, before moving to silver and gold. He apprenticed with artists Bill Reid, Alfie Collison and Morris White (Christian White's father). His favorite material to work with is silver.
Although mainly known for his hand-carved jewelry, Boyko has also carved several major totem pole commissions, including a 40-foot pole for the Skidegate Museum on Haida Gwaii as well as a totem pole for famous British Artist Damien Hirst that he carved in 2007. In 2011 the 40' totem pole that he carved with Jason Goetzinger was raised by Sidney Crosby (Haida name Wigaanad) chief of the Naa'yuu'ans, Skidegate Gidins at his home in Skidegate BC.
