Born 1973, Whitehorse, Yukon Territory
Vernon Asp was born in the Yukon in 1973. He studied Northwest Coast art at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art near Hazelton, BC.
At Gitanmaax, Asp has been fortunate enough to receive formal instruction from K'san Master Carvers Ken Mowatt and Vernon Stephens. Both Mowatt and Stephens have taught young up-and-coming carvers for over two decades. Asp sights his friend and Kwakwaka'wakw carver, Eugene Alfred, as having a "tremendous" influence on his work.
In 1998, Asp carved and painted thirteen paddles, which were presented at the Canadian Travel Awards that were held in London, England.
