T’samuus is a monumental cut-aluminum piece by Haida artist Robert Davidson. Standing 10 feet tall, T’samuus is made up of elements from Northwest Coast Formline. Davidson has taken the ovoid, U-form and split-U and made them abstract, giving traditional the Northwest Coast art form a modern refinement. The use of high-gloss bright red speaks to the traditional use of iron oxides, while the brilliant finish evokes the modern design of contemporary luxury and power. The name T’samuus means “Sea Monster”, a supernatural creature in myths and legends passed down through oral histories along the Northwest Coast.
