Baleen Whales, usually gray or humpback, are quite common in Northwest Coast designs, especially in Nuu-chah-nulth art. Native whalers traditionally hunted humpback and California gray whales. The Nuu-chah-nulth and the Makah were particularly prominent whaling cultures. Whaling was considered a prestigious, noble and dangerous undertaking. Numerous masks, effigies and other items were designed to bless chief whalers and their crews.
