An unusual piece, this historic rendition of a Frog sits in a tense pose and may have been created for shamanic purposes. It is unusual because many art forms on the Northwest Coast were decorations that adorned utilitarian objects. This Frog sculpture appears to have no utilitarian purpose and could have been created and used as a puppet or toy.
"As a creature that lives in two worlds, water and land, the frog is revered for its adaptability, knowledge and power to traverse worlds and inhabit diverse realms, both natural and supernatural. Frogs are the primary spirit helper of shamans" (Shearar 2000:48). – Understanding Northwest Coast Art: A Guide to Crests, Beings and Symbols
