From Cheryl Shearar’s Understanding Northwest Coast Art
Many human heroes of legend and myths are depicted in the art. Strong Man, also known as Dirty Skin, lifts a sea lion and tears it apart to demonstrate his great strength. Gunaxnasimgyet undertakes dangerous journeys to the other worlds above and below the earthly domain. Such legendary figures are often depicted in transit, riding on the back of an animal spirit guide. Many legends are now lost, which means that the iconography of many older works of art remains mysterious.
