Hand carved wood panels that exceed four feet in diameter, like this five foot panel by Tahltan artist Alano Edzerza, are challenging pieces to carve and design. There is less control over the space and every mistake can be amplified. To fill such a large surface area and maintain the scale and balance that is needed is one of the biggest barriers to making a piece this size and as a result they do not often come to the market. Douglas has worked with Alano since very early in his career and has watched as he has developed and become one of the most exciting young Northwest Coast artists making work today. Alano is diverse and innovative in the format and materials that he uses to showcase his art, but as this Wolf panel shows, he is also a talented carver.
