Alfred apprenticed with his father Wayne Alfred, his uncle Bruce Alfred, his grandfather Henry Speck, as well as Beau Dick. He was related to the Hunts of Fort Rupert, and was a descendant of George Hunt. He had the hereditary right to carve in both the Kwakw\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ea\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003ek\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ea\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003e’wakw and Tlingit styles.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\t\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\t\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003e Alfred was best known for his powerful traditional masks inspired by his Kwakw\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ea\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003ek\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ea\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003e’wakw heritage and family rights. He was also an active contributor to his culture, participating in potlatching, dancing, and communicating oral histories and cultural traditions to others. When Alfred was 12 he was initiated to the Hamat'sa, the Winter Dance ceremonies, a complex and integral part of Kwakw\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ea\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003ek\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ea\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003e’wakw culture. Alfred's potlatch name was P'adzisma\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cu style=\"color: black;\"\u003ex\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: black;\"\u003ewa, which is a Hamat'sa name passed down from his great-grandfather.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e","products":[],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0452\/6814\/0199\/collections\/veevart_ddda1b63-fe16-4619-90e9-cc928e50d9d6.png?v=1780177896","url":"https:\/\/douglasreynoldsgallery.com\/collections\/marcus-alfred.oembed","provider":"Douglas Reynolds Gallery","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
