T’samuus is a monumental cut-aluminum piece by Haida artist Robert Davidson. This series was an edition of five with an Artist Proof of one. Standing 10 feet tall, T’samuus is made up of elements from Northwest Coast Formline. Davidson has taken the ovoid, U-form, and split-U and made them abstract, giving traditional the Northwest Coast art form a modern refinement. The use of high-gloss bright red speaks to the traditional use of iron oxides, while the brilliant finish evokes the modern design of contemporary luxury and power. The name T’samuus means “Sea Monster”, a supernatural creature in myths and legends passed down through oral histories along the Northwest Coast.
