This aluminum piece was created to celebrate the gallery’s 20th anniversary. For the occasion, Doug approached Don Yeomans (Haida) with the idea of creating a special aluminum gate for the gallery.
Don explained that he had always been drawn to the frog's friendly appearance and saw it as a welcoming figure. Doug, meanwhile, liked the frog’s association with good luck and good fortune, symbolism that appears across many cultures.
The choice of a frog also held a personal connection for Doug. On the gallery's opening day, he was given a small stone carved with a frog. Intended as a doorstop to keep the gallery doors open, it was also meant to bring good fortune making the frog a particularly fitting symbol to welcome visitors into the gallery.
