Barry Scow apprenticed under Beau Dick who was one of the most prominent carvers on the Northwest Coast. We talked to Barry and confirmed that he made this mask. He especially liked the design element on the underside of the Frog as it was inspired by a box design by Beau.

Although Barry can’t quite remember the details, Beau signed the mask as it was based on his design. It was probably done as it would have been worth more to include Beau’s signature on it and, when the mask was being sold, Barry was likely in a rush and forgot to sign it himself. In the 80s and 90s, many artists were superstitious about signing a mask before it was sold so that step was sometimes forgotten. Barry does not come into the gallery regularly, but if he comes in, he will sign the mask.
