Mianna (Mia) Sutherland (they/them) is Nuu-chah-nulth from Ahousaht and Kwakwaka’wakw from 'Namgis and Kingcome.
Born on June 26, 2000, Mia has grown up immersed in their culture and community. Mia’s traditional name is Tlaya which translates to "Great Granddaughter" in Nuu-chah-nulth and Malidi which translates to “secret keeper” in Kwakwaka’wakw. Mia has spent their life surrounded by their family's arts and culture and recently has realized a desire to learn more about how to make these cultural items themself.
As of the fall of 2024 Mia has been apprenticing with mastercarver Moy Sutherland and has been attentively working at learning the basics of formline and all things Northwest Coast carving. Mia’s interest in design, sculpture, painting, and relief carving have inspired their first few pieces. This has galvanized their interest in furthering their art career.
