Peter Gong

Peter is a Coast Salish artist and member of the Squamish Nation. Gong grew up on Whonnock Reserve #1 and has always been interested in his culture. As a child, Gong spent many hours on the Fraser River fishing with his uncle who would recount stories and legends of his nation. Through these experiences, Gong was inspired to stay true to his art. Peter Gong was taught how to carve in ivory and wood in his teens by his uncle, Jack Miranda. Gong now works primarily in cedar. He carves masks and bentwood boxes, panels, paddles, and rattles.

Peter has had the opportunity to work on a pole that was gifted by Mission City, BC to it's sister city, Oyama in Japan. He has also carved for BC Hydro and for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
