Sean Hinton is of Cherokee/Black descent who has been adopted into the Coast Salish nation. He began carving in 1995 when a friend gave him some carving knives that he had made in school. Hinton’s first teacher was Rocky Larock but was taken under the wing of Nuu-chah-nulth artist, Tom Patterson, in 1998.
Through his association with Patterson, he has met and learned from Gene Brabant, Stan Hunt, and Tony Hunt Jr. Hinton feels that creating Northwest Coast art provides an insight into the past and future, struggles and triumphs of the native people of the Northwest Coast.
