Stone Sam, who was given the traditional name Manłida’as, meaning Knowledge Holder, is a Squamish and Kwakiutl artist from West Vancouver, British Columbia. Drawn to creative expression from an early age, Stone has explored many forms of art throughout their life.
Their artistic journey took on new meaning when they began learning carving and design from their father, the renowned artist Klatle-Bhi. Through his guidance and mentorship, Stone developed a deeper connection to Northwest Coast art traditions while finding their own artistic voice. Inspired by storytelling, Stone creates work that shares the meaning behind each piece and invites viewers to engage with the stories, symbolism, and imagination woven into the artwork.
Stone is currently continuing to refine their skills and expand their artistic practice as a second-year student at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art in Terrace, British Columbia. Their work reflects both a commitment to cultural knowledge and a dedication to carrying traditional art forms forward through a contemporary lens.
