Victor Reece

Victor Reece was born near Prince Rupert, at the family home, built on pylons on the banks of the Skeena River in Northwest British Columbia. He was a member of the Wolf Clan of the Tsimshian Nation and his hereditary name was Whe’X Hue, meaning Big Sky. Reece studied at the ‘Ksan School of Art in Hazelton, BC and aided in the design and production of a traditional Tsimshian longhouse for the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s Great Hall.

Reece was one of the most highly respected Native Carvers in British Columbia. He was also recognized as a Storyteller and Educator. He was employed by the Vancouver School Board as a Storyteller and a Native Liaison Educator, a position that correlates Native traditions with urban school issues. He was also a storyteller for the Vancouver Children’s Festival and numerous other venues over the past decade, sharing the traditions of his northern culture.

As an accomplished artist, Reece’s experience, technique and workmanship were evident in each piece he created, whether a mask, rattle, bowl or sculpture. His understanding and knowledge of his culture and of the medium that he utilizes portrayed an advanced carving ability that surpasses most.
