"In the Haida way, only our mother’s brothers are our uncles. They are in the same clan as we are and have a specific role in our lives. They are our teachers and our advisors. Our uncles are not only human, though. My gwaay.yaay, Lawrence Bell and my uncle Alfred told me that the halibut is also our uncle. My tsinii taught me to jig for halibut when I was a boy. I learned the phrase “Make your mind strong” from my tsinii when he spoke to the halibut to prepare it for its journey to the next world. The way he spoke to the halibut taught me to respect all beings, especially those who offer themselves as food to sustain us. My uncles were some of my greatest teachers. They contributed to who I am today. And even now, after they are gone, I continue to be guided by their advice."
