Eugene Isaac was born in Alert Bay 1958, he was raised by his grandparents, Ben and Dorothy Isaac. His grandmother was the daughter of Kweeha chief, Thomas Nowell whose family was the subject of C.S. Ford's book “Smoke From Their Fires.” He grew up surrounded in the rich cultural traditions of Alert Bay which is a traditional village site that has remained constantly involved in cultural activities. He began learning two dimensional design at a very young age, and he now considered among the strongest Kwakwaka’wakw designers. He has studied many of the master artists such as Mungo Martin, Henry Speck, Willie Seaweed, Charlie James and Blackie Dick.
