Adkins began his study of the Northwest Coast form in 1970 with the renowned Haida totem pole carver Freda Diesing, and has worked alongside master Haida artists Bill Reid and Robert Davidson. Over his career, Adkins has studied anatomical drawings and classical art history, an undertaking that has influenced his creative process.

Adkins' work is represented in various private and corporate collections around the world. His work has also been exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Royal British Columbia Museum, and the Royal Ontario Museum.
